Travel & Education Bursary for Guild members

Did you know that being a member of The Quilters’ Guild can give you access to funds to further your passion?

An Award of £1,000 is given once every two years to a Guild member to help meet the cost of attending an international quilt event. The applicant must have been a Guild member for at least two years.

Katja May won the award in 2018, which she used towards visiting QuiltCon 2019, the Modern Quilt Guild’s annual convention, which was held in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, 21–24 February 2019.

Infinite Magnification by Christine Perrigo, Erie, Colorado, USA. Winner Modern Traditionalism.

“It’s quilts like these that for years have nurtured my wish to attend QuiltCon, the annual quilt show of the Modern Quilt Guild (MQG). In February 2019, thanks to The Guild’s generous Member Travel Award, this dream finally came true. While my own quilting practice certainly has a modern slant and I’ve experimented with improvisational (improv) piecing, the use of solids and negative space, I’ve long wished to create quilts that reflect my own political commitment to social justice issues such as women’s rights and antiracism.”

The Award can also apply towards virtual attendance at an international quilting event which would extend and enhance the recipients knowledge of patchwork, quilting or associated textile techniques.

Resistance 2

Resistance by Laura Lowen, Colorado, USA. An entry in Two-Color Quilt Challenge.

“I am so grateful to The Guild for the opportunity to attend this fantastic event. Not only have I been able to develop my quilting skills, I also thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere of the show and met many interesting people, engaging in some great conversations. I will certainly treasure the memories of my first visit to a large American quilt show and can only encourage everyone to apply for the 2020 Guild Member Travel Award – wherever you go, it’s sure to be a unique and enriching experience.”

Due to the current travel restrictions caused by Covid-19, it has been decided to extend the deadline for applications to the end of November 2020 in the hope that later on in the year we should know more. The award will be made available from January 2021.
