Inspiration for the 2018 Festival of Quilts souvenir badge

Standard

This year marks a very special coincidence of dates and events which has inspired the design behind the Festival of Quilts 2018 badge. As we celebrate the tercentenary of our 1718 Silk Patchwork Coverlet, we felt it would be appropriate to take inspiration from a block of this iconic piece. This year is also the centenary of the Representation of the People Act, the historic culmination of many years of brave and selfless campaigning for suffrage from women throughout the country.

These two historic dates come together to be celebrated in the 2018 Festival of Quilts badge design. We chose an inspiration block from the 1718 Coverlet which depicts a stylised woman, with this image then being represented in the suffragette colours of purple, green and white on the badge itself.

On display at the festival will be the banner designed by Alison Garner and produced by members of the Guild in commemoration of the centenary of the 1918 Act. The banner was carried through London on 10th June as part of the PROCESSIONS mass participation artwork, which celebrated 100 years of votes for women.

We think this year’s badge feels very fitting. What do you think?
